The Bottled Imp - Episode 111 We’ve always said that the fantasy genre is wide and far reaching. We always said that reviewing fantasy books, board games and films is great. But what else is out there? What else can the fantasy genre express itself? Now I don’t really read comics. There, I said it. I know, for some that will be a hard pill to swallow. For others, it’ll be neither here nor there. Not sure why I don’t read them but I’ve never really been drawn to them (yes, see what I did there!). I used to read Superman and Batman comics when a very small lad but somewhere along the line I never made it to the grown up world of graphic novels and adult comics. So it’s with great pleasure to delve, albeit temporally, into this foreign land. Regular Bottled Imp viewer and all round nice guy Andy Craig (who happens to work for Games Workshop), watch our review of the ‘Heavy Metal’ film: https://youtu.be/rUpMOXtFgzg and very kindly helped me out with my knowledge of the origins of the film. I’d seen the posters for the ‘Heavy Metal’ film as a kid but never know what it was all about. Well, let me tell you, it’s certainly not for kids! We need to go back to 1975, when the French science-fantasy magazine Métal Hurlant had debuted January 1975. It was American publisher Leonard Mogel who was in Paris to jump-start the French edition of National Lampoon, that first noticed this strange magazine who’s actual translated name means ‘Howling Metal’. Mogel promptly brought it back to America to create the English version and the rest as they say, is history. The magazine is still going strong to this day after continuous publication. Also, within this episode, I chat about fantasy artists John Blanche and Ian Miller and their early book ‘Ratspike’ when they were working for Games Workshop. Another love of Andy’s. I’d mentioned in a review that I loved Ian Miller’s pen and ink work and low and behold it turns out Andy knew him. But that is for another day… ------------------------------------------ The Bottled Imp Exploring the Realms of Fantasy. ***** New shows every Wednesday & Friday ***** SUBSCRIBE NOW!..... http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=TheBottledImp FOLLOW US...... http://www.twitter.com/TheBottledImp http://www.facebook.com/TheBottledImp Presented by Ken Boyter http://www.kenboyter.co.uk Produced & Directed by Julian Newman Turner http://www.luciddreampictures.com http://www.facebook.com/luciddreampictures Music by Greg Breden http://www.gregbreden.magix.net/website Artwork by Richard Nairn http://www.theartfuldoodler.co.uk

A skit from the 1988 show "4 On the Floor" starring Canadian comedy troupe, The Frantics. Heavy Metal Shop was originally a sketch done on their early-80s radio show, Frantic Times. The Frantics are best known for their song "Boot to the Head" and characters Mr. Canoehead & The Ultramind. As a life-long Heavy Metal fan with a preference for the old days of big hair and outrageous gimmicks, this parody hits home for me as both awesome and hilarious. This footage is supplied for non-profit use by an American who discovered the humorous Canadian-centric comedy stylings of The Frantics far later than preferred.

It is with a somewhat heavy heart that I complete my Heavy Metal collection. There were times when I thought it impossible even with eBay and comic conventions/Stores et al.. But I have arrived at what is a somewhat bittersweet moment. As we collectors know it is the chase that keeps us going. So as I move into the future of my collecting anything graphic related I begin to ponder my future. Not in the video. I am waxing philosophic here in my description only. What's next you ask? Metal Hurlant is next as well as finishing my run of Epic illustrated. After that who knows? I certainly don't.

Starring the voices of Michael Ironside, Julie Strain, and Billy Idol, the film is the follow-up to the 1981 animated cult film Heavy Metal, which is based on the fantasy magazine of the same name. The story is based on the graphic novel, The Melting Pot, written by Kevin Eastman, Simon Bisley and Eric Talbot. The film was made by CinéGroupe, a studio based in Montreal, Quebec. Cast: Michael Ironside as Tyler Julie Strain Eastman as Julie; the on-screen character was also based on Strain's likeness Billy Idol as Odin Pierre Kohn as Germain St. Germain Sonja Ball as Kerrie Brady Moffatt as Lambert Rick Jones as Zeek Arthur Holden as Dr. Schechter Heavy Metal 2000 received negative reviews; based on 10 critics, the film currently holds a 10% rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The film had a video game about the events after Heavy Metal 2000, titled Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.², in which the player assumes the role of Julie as she fights to save Eden from an evil entity called "GITH". The game is set some time after the film and features cameo appearances of several characters, for example, Julie's sister Kerrie, the pilot Germaine (now married to Kerrie), and a resurrected Tyler. Retro Nerd Girl reviews the movie Heavy Metal released in 1981. Starring: Richard Romanus, John Candy, Joe Flaherty. Directed by: Gerald Potterton and Various Artist. This is a compilation of stories following the trail of a mysterious green orb, called the Loc-Nar that sometimes does far more harm than good wherever it goes in the universe. The film uses much of the themes of the Heavy Metal Magazine which was first published in France under the name Métal Hurlant or as it is translated "Howling Metal" in January 1975 before publisher Leonard Mogel brought it to America. The magazine is now owned by Kevin Eastman (co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and still runs to this day. Heavy Metal is an American science fiction and fantasy comics magazine, known primarily for its blend of dark fantasy/science fiction and erotica. In the mid-1970s, while publisher Leonard Mogel was in Paris to jump-start the French edition of National Lampoon, he discovered the French science-fantasy magazine Métal Hurlant which had debuted January 1975. The French title translates literally as "Howling Metal." When Mogel licensed the American version, he chose to rename it, and Heavy Metal began in the U.S. In April 1977 as a glossy, full-color monthly. Initially, it displayed translations of graphic stories originally published in Métal Hurlant, including work by Enki Bilal, Philippe Caza, Guido Crepax, Philippe Druillet, Jean-Claude Forest, Jean Giraud (aka Moebius) and Milo Manara. The magazine later ran Stefano Tamburini and Tanino Liberatore's ultra-violent RanXerox. Since the color pages had already been shot in France, the budget to reproduce them in the U.S. version was greatly reduced. The screenplay was written by Daniel Goldberg and Len Blum. The film was the sixth animated feature film to be presented in Dolby surround sound. The film is an anthology of various science fiction and fantasy stories adapted from Heavy Metal magazine and original stories in the same spirit. Like the magazine, the film features a great deal of graphic violence, sexuality, and nudity. Its production was expedited by having several animation houses working simultaneously on different segments, including CinéGroupe and Atkinson Film-Arts.
