The Caspian: Sea or Lake?

06:11
There's some confusion around the Caspian Sea, namely, is it actually a sea? Don't we usually call fully enclosed bodies of water, lakes? Hopefully this clears things up a little. Music provided by StoneOcean: https://soundcloud.com/stone_ocean

Why RUSSIA wants to control the BLACK SEA? - KJ Vids

13:43
In the mounting tension between Great Powers, the Black Sea holds a particular strategic importance. It represents the waterway connecting Europe, Russia and the Middle East and is believed to host substantial reserves of hydrocarbons. It’s unique location makes it an important gateway for gas pipelines fuelling European markets and is a key theatre in the confrontation between Russia and NATO. I’m Kasim and welcome to KJ Vids. In this video, we will look at the geopolitics of the Black Sea based on strategic reports by two analysts. The first report is by Alessandro Gagaridis on the geopolitical monitor website published on September 19, 2018 Link - https://www.geopoliticalmonitor.com/t... Link to Mr Gagaridis's personal website - www.strategikos.it The second is an essay by Boris Toucas from the Centre for Strategic & International Studies published on 2nd February 2017 Link - https://www.csis.org/analysis/geostra... Crisis in Ukraine : Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways

10:03
Crisis in Ukraine: Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways On May 15, President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the Crimean Bridge – “a super 19-kilometre-long construction” linking Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar region. This bridge is strategic and broader the economic and geopolitical implications in the region. The decision of Crimea to join the Russian Federation has strategic and geopolitical implications. The union of Crimea with Russia redefines both the geography as well as the geopolitical chessboard in the Black Sea basin. It constitutes a major setback for US-NATO, whose longstanding objective has been to integrate Ukraine into NATO with a view to undermining Russia, while extending Western military presence in the Black Sea basin. With the March 18, 2014 Treaty signed between Russia and Crimea, the Russian Federation will extend its control over the Black Sea as well over the Sea of Azov, the West coastline of which borders on Eastern Ukraine and the Donesk region. Under the agreement between Russia and Crimea announced by president Putin, two “constituent regions” of Crimea will join the Russian Federation: the “Republic of Crimea” and the “City of Sevastopol”. Both will have the status of “autonomous regions”. The status of Sevastopol as an autonomous entity separate from Crimea is related to the location of Russia’s Naval base in Sevastopol. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia retained its naval base in Sevastopol under a bilateral agreement with Ukraine. With the signing of the March 18th Treaty, that agreement is null and void. Sevastopol including the Russian naval base become part of an autonomous region within the Russian Federation. The naval base is no within Ukraine under a lease agreement. Moreover, Crimea’s territorial waters now belong to the Russian Federation. Russia now formally controls a much larger portion of the Black Sea, which includes the entire coastline of the Crimean peninsula. The Eastern part of Crimea –including the Kerch straits– are now under Russia’s jurisdiction control. On the Eastern side of the Kerch straits is Russia’s Krasnodar region and extending southwards are the port cities of Novorossiysk and Sochi. Novorossiysk is also strategic. It is Russia’s largest commercial port on the Black Sea, at the cross-roads of major oil and gas pipelines between the Black Sea and Caspian sea. Historically, the Kerch straits have played a strategic role. They constitute a gateway from the Black Sea to Russia’s major waterways including the Don and the Volga. During World War II, the Kerch peninsula occupied by Nazi Germany was an important point of transit by land and water. In the coldest months of Winter, it became an ice bridge linking Crimea to the Krasnodar region. The Kerch straits are about 5 kilometers in length and 4.5 km. wide at the narrowest point between the tip of Eastern Crimea and the peninsula of Taman. Kerch is a major commercial port linked to railway, ferry and river routes. the integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation means that Moscow is now in full control of the Kerch Straits linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian authorities are no longer in control of the port of Kerch. The bilateral agreement between Russia and Ukraine governing the maritime route through the Kerch straights has been scrapped. The straits constitute an entry point into Russia’s major river waterways. The Sea of Azov connects with the Don River and the Volga, through the Volga Don Canal. In turn, the Volga flows into the Caspian sea. The Kerch straits are strategic. The Kerch-Yenikalskiy Canal allows large vessels to transit from the Black sea to the Sea of Azov. the Kerch Straits link the Black Sea to the Volga which in turn connects to the Moscow river through the Volga-Moskva canal. Full control of the narrow Kerch straits by Russia ensures unimpeded maritime transit from the Black Sea to Russia’s capital as well as the maritime route to the Caspian Sea. The Russia-Ukraine 2013 agreement pertaining to the construction of the bridge had, for all purposes already been scrapped before March 16. Crimea’s union to Russia was already in the pipeline prior to the referendum, it was a fait accompli. Less than two weeks before the March 16 Referendum, at the height of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered the state-road building corporation “Russian Highways” “to create a subsidiary company that will oversee the building of a bridge across the Kerch Strait”. This bridge would largely be geared towards train transport routes linking Western and Eastern Europe to the Caspian Sea basin, Kazakhstan and China. subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9IFRHTtYJFjhI5fBrLIJiQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DNA997

Rize is one of the smallest provinces of Turkey on the Black Sea coast but also one of the most important since it is the tea-industry center with processing and packing factories. The city is built in an area where the bright green tea bushes cover entire mountainsides. From Ziraat Park in the city you will have a panoramic view of the area and be able to capture that unique beauty. Caspian Sea Monster Ekranoplan Flight Video

01:11
These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest had max take-off weight over 544 tonnes. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union smaller ekranoplans for non-military use have been under development. The CHDB had already developed the eight-seat Volga-2 in 1985, and Technologies and Transport developed a smaller version by the name of Amphistar.

What happened to the Ekranoplan, the huge ground effect vehicle the Soviets developed in the cold from the 1960's to the 1980's. This was a part plane, part boat that could fly just above the above the sea surface and carry huge loads of personnel or weapons at high speed. Leading waterway

10:51
There is remarkable similarity between the Volga-Don and a typical busy highway. The waterways of the Volga-Don basin are some of the most overstretched shipping waterways. Forty vessels pass through the locks every day. The canal’s design carrying capacity of 10.5 million tonnes per year has virtually been exceeded. There is an obvious need to build a second Volga-Don channel. Building of the second Volga-Don channel corresponds to demands for an innovative course of growth for the Russian economy and corresponds to global worldwide trends.

SYND 23 6 79 SEA ILLEGAL FISHING OF STURGEON IN CASPIAN SEA AND CAVIAR CANNERIES

02:23
(23 Jun 1979) The disorder of the Iranian revolution has produced a boom for caviar smuggling, the Caspian fisherman's favourite sideline. The government has a monopoly of the caviar business and anyone outside the state-owned fishing company is guilty of a crime, but in the confusion that has followed the revolution, the law has broken down and the "pirate" caviar dealers have grasped their opportunity. Azerbaijan on the map resembles a bird that flies from the east with wide open wings. Baku, the capital looking to the Caspian, is a rapidly developing industrial city. This ancient country, once an important stop on the Great Silk Road, has many exciting places - the Bronze Age petroglyphs, medieval minarets and mosques and the famous Azerbaijani carpets. About a third of the population of Azerbaijan lives in the capital, the largest metropolis of the South Caucasus. This beautiful city is located around the ideal bay, the Baku Gulf in the lower part of the Absheron Peninsula. Baku and the 70-kilometer peninsula enjoy sunny and surprisingly dry weather. Azerbaijan is still a Klondike of "black gold". So they call not only oil, but also black caviar. Its extraction is now strictly controlled and limited by state quotas. The best caviar in the world is the caviar of the Caspian Sea. Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan border the Caspian Sea, which is the largest lake in the world. The surface of the Caspian Sea is 374,000 square kilometers. km. One of its advantages is the prevalence of 80-90% of sturgeon in it. From sturgeon get caviar, which is a "symbol of luxury". Sturgeon is in fact a prehistoric species of the animal world, surviving to this day since the time of the existence of dinosaurs.

Russia Is Building a New 'Caspian Sea Monster'

03:06
Russia Is Building a New 'Caspian Sea Monster' to speed up water travel, the Chaika A-050, which it claims will be ready by 2020-2022. The unusual aircraft, which flies just a few feet above the surface of a body of water, will act as a passenger transport, carrying up to 100. A basic aerodynamic principle is that the closer a wing operates to the ground, the more efficient it becomes. That isn't a factor for most aircraft, which endeavor to stay far away from the ground during the vast majority of their flying hours. A ground effect vehicle, on the other hand, embraces the increased wing efficiency by hugging the surface of an ocean, lake, or other body of water. GEVs fly over water because it is universally flat without obstacles and safer to crash on in the event of emergencies. The Soviet Union was an early pioneer in GEV research, building the so-called "Caspian Sea Monster" in the mid-1960s. At 544 tons, the Caspian Sea Monster was the largest GEV ever built. According to a 2015 report by Valuewalk.com, the Chaika A-050 will travel at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour, with a range of 3,000 miles. It will be able to carry at least nine tons of cargo or 100 passengers. However, a Sputnik News report indicated that the Russians could install the BrahMos missile on the new ekranoplan. Ivan Antsev, the Scientific Production Enterprise Radar MMS general manager, said the new GEV would be capable of serving in the interests of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the ministry of emergencies, the ministry of transport and the Defense Ministry.
Caspian Sea Monster

An ekranoplan (Russian: экранопла́н, literally "screen plane") is a vehicle resembling an aircraft but that operates solely on the principle of ground effect (in Russian эффект экрана effekt ekrana - from which the name derived). Ground effect vehicles (GEV) fly above any flat surface, with the height above ground dependent upon the size of the vehicle. The "Caspian Sea Monster" model KM ekranoplan During the Cold War, ekranoplans were sighted for years on the Caspian Sea as huge, fast-moving objects. The name Caspian Sea Monster was given by US intelligence operatives who had spotted the huge vehicle, which looked like an airplane with the outer halves of the wings removed. After the end of the Cold War, the "monster" was revealed to be one of several Soviet military designs meant to fly only a few meters above water, saving energy and staying below enemy radar. The KM, as the Caspian Sea Monster was known in the top secret Soviet military development program, was over 100 m long (330 ft), weighed 540 tonnes fully loaded, and could travel over 400 km/h (250 mi/h), mere meters above the surface of the water. Another model was the Lun-class. The ekranoplan has a lifting power of 1,000 tonnes[citation needed], among the largest ever achieved.[citation needed] The important design principle is that wing lift is reduced as operating altitude of the ekranoplan is increased (see ground effect). Thus it is dynamically stable in the vertical dimension. Once moving at speed, the ekranoplan was no longer in contact with the water, and could move over ice, snow, or level land with equal ease, though flight over land would have involved extreme risks unless the surface were very dependably flat. These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were mostly based on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest could transport over 100 tonnes of cargo. The development of ekranoplans was supported by Dmitri Ustinov, Minister of Defence of the USSR. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. The figure was later reduced to fewer than thirty vehicles, planned to be deployed mainly for the Black and the Baltic Soviet navies. Marshal Ustinov died in 1985, and the new Minister of Defence Marshal Sokolov effectively stopped the funding for the program. The only three operational A-90 Orlyonok ekranoplans built (with renewed hull design) and one Lun-class ekranoplan remained at a naval base near Kaspiysk. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, ekranoplans have been produced by the Volga Shipyard[1] in Nizhni Novgorod located at 56°21′58.08″N, 43°52′14.26″E. As of 2006-09-06, two ekranoplans could be seen on Google Earth at Kaspiysk, The Lun, located at 42°52′54″N, 47°39′24″E and an Orlyonok at 42°52′50″N, 47°39′57″E. A structure on a nearby beach may be a third disassembled ekranoplan.
